How to Play

Play Discover Ancient Rome online for free. Discover Ancient Rome is a Mahjong Solitaire and Spot the Difference game rolled into one. Play through levels based on 17 historical locations. This game is rendered in mobile-friendly HTML5, so it offers cross-device gameplay. You can play it on mobile devices like Apple iPhones, Google Android powered cell phones from manufactures like Samsung, tablets like the iPad or Kindle Fire, laptops, and Windows-powered desktop computers. All game files are stored locally in your web browser cache. This game works in Apple Safari, Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, Opera and other modern web browsers.

  • Starting the Game
    • On the welcome screen, select Play to begin.
      • Select Help to learn the rules of the game.
      • Select High Scores to see the leaderboard.
      • Select the gear button on the bottom right corner to open the following controls:
        • Use the speaker and music buttons to turn the game’s sound on and off.
        • Use Reset to clear your game progress.
        • Use the drop-down list on the bottom left corner to choose the game’s language. This also appears in the game screen.
        • Your web browser automatically saves your game progress.
        • Game Controls
          • Desktop
            • With your mouse:
              • Left click to select the stones.
              • Left click to find the differences in the image.
              • Touchscreen devices
                • With your fingers:
                  • Tap on the stones to select them
                  • Tap on the differences to find them.
                  • Controls and indicators
                    • The game’s controls and indicators are located on the right side of the screen. From the top, they are as follows:
                      • Enlarge button: :Lets you switch between windowed and full screen modes
                      • Level number
                      • Level score
                      • Level timer
                      • Number of available open stone pairs / Number of differences in the two images
                      • Speaker button: Turns the game’s sound effects on and off
                      • Music button: Turns the game’s music on and off
                      • Pause button
                      • Hint button
                      • On the level selection screen are the following controls:
                        • The level icons appear on a winding path at the center of the screen..
                        • The bottom right corner contains the following controls:
                          • Menu button: Takes you back to the welcome screen
                          • Play button: Starts the game
                          • The top left corner shows your total score for the playthrough.
                          • Game Play
                            • Levels
                              • Levels are unlocked sequentially:
                                • You automatically start every new playthrough on the first level.
                                • Finishing one level automatically unlocks the next one.
                                • Each level has as its background a painting of one of Rome’s major landmarks.
                                • The game has 17 levels.
                                • You can replay any of the levels you’ve already unlocked from the level selection screen.
                                • Basic rules
                                  • Mahjong connect
                                    • Select identical pairs of stones to remove them from the stack. The Mahjong stones in this game are themed after the legions of Ancient Rome.
                                      • Only free stones can be cleared.
                                        • Free stones have no stone on top of them and at least one side (left or right) without an adjacent stone.
                                        • The game helpfully highlights the free stones. Free stones are brighter, while non-free stones are grayed out.
                                        • You can only select open stones. They turn yellow when selected
                                        • Clear the entire stack before the timer runs out.
                                          • You start the first level with 4 minutes and 39 seconds on the clock.
                                          • Later levels have more stones and a longer time limit.
                                          • If you don’t remove all the stones before time runs out, you fail the level.
                                            • You can opt to try again.
                                            • Otherwise, you can quit your playthrough and save your score on the leaderboard.
                                            • If you run out of pairs, the game automatically shuffles the stack.
                                              • This means there is always at least one open valid match.
                                              • Spot the difference
                                                • Find all the differences between the 2 images shown before the timer expires.
                                                • Scoring
                                                  • You have 2 scores:
                                                    • Your level score represents your best score in a level.
                                                    • Your total score is the sum of all your level scores.
                                                    • Level score
                                                      • Each pair of stones you clear is worth 100 points.
                                                      • Each difference you spot is worth 300 points.
                                                      • After finishing a level, you also earn 3 bonus points from every second left on the timer.
                                                        • During the spot the difference game, clicking or tapping anywhere other than a difference will deduct 5 seconds from your time. This is the equivalent of losing 15 points.
                                                        • You can improve your level score by replaying the level and earning a higher score.
                                                        • Your level score is shown below the level’s icon on the selection screen.
                                                        • Total score
                                                          • You can improve your total score by playing more levels or replaying earlier levels.
                                                          • Your total score is shown in the top right corner of the level selection screen.
                                                          • There are two ways to save your total score:
                                                            • Play through all 17 levels.
                                                            • End the playthrough after a game over.
                                                            • Hints
                                                              • Selecting the hint button will highlight an available pair anywhere on the stack. It will also show where the difference is in the two images.
                                                              • Hints cost 300 points, so use them sparingly.
                                                              • Target Audience
                                                                • The game is suited for players who like Mahjong Solitaire tile match games and spot the difference games.
                                                                • The game has no adult themed content.
